HUMAN RIGHTS BRIGADES

WHAT IS A HUMAN RIGHTS BRIGADE ?

The Human Rights Brigade works with pro-bono lawyers to offer legal assistance, counseling, and workshops to indigenous, rural Honduran communities. On the brigade, volunteers empower community members by giving them legal information and consultations. In the past, these resources were typically completely lacking or misrepresented in the Honduran communities. On the brigade, volunteers partake in four different activities. First, volunteers shadow lawyers in legal clinics. During these clinics, lawyers offer free legal advice to communities. Second, volunteers will work in groups on family law cases. These cases are typically marriage, divorce or childcare cases. Volunteers will interview families and intake procedures in order to help solve a case that would have otherwise taken years to solve. Volunteers will also hold educational charlas for adults and community members of the village. They will plan workshops that deal with complex issues such as gender vs. sex, relationship violence, or the rights of the child. Volunteers will be an active voice for community members to understand important legal and human rights issues that impact them on a daily basis. Finally, volunteers will partake in mooting, which is a mock legal debate. They will be debating a topic that is modeled after an actual Honduran human rights case. After all the hard work and new, exciting experiences, volunteers will partake in a community cultural activity, such as dancing and socializing with community members.
